Pintia Toro by Vega Sicilia
If Vega Sicilia’s Unico is the grand patriarch of Spanish wine, then Pintia is the daring, adventurous younger brother. Located in the rugged region of Toro, just down the river from Ribera del Duero, Bodegas Pintia was established by the Álvarez family to see if they could tame the famously wild and powerful grapes of the area. The result is a wine that keeps all the "muscle" and soul of Toro but delivers it with the incredible silkiness and class you expect from a top-tier producer. These vines grow in stony, sun-drenched soils that create thick-skinned grapes, resulting in a wine that is dark, aromatic, and built to last. The 2019 vintage is a masterclass in balance. It is a "fresher" style for Pintia, showing beautiful notes of juicy blueberries, tarry blackberries, and a hint of wet stone. On the palate, it feels broad and stony but never heavy. It’s a sophisticated red that is ready to enjoy now but will happily sit in your cellar for another decade. The 2020 comes from a much warmer, more intense growing season. To keep the wine elegant, the winemakers used clay amphorae (large jars) during ageing to preserve the fruit's freshness. This is a big, "hugging" wine - it’s juicy and full of character, with flavours of ripe prunes, violets, and black plums. It is bold, lush, and unapologetically rich.
